Deganwy Chosen for new Recycling Trial

Part of Deganwy has been designated a platinum area because measurements show that it has been recycling more waste than any other part of Conwy county.

This section of Deganwy has therefore been chosen to trial Conwy's next enhanced recycling stage, which will include food waste and plastics.

At the next meeting of the Deganwy and District Residents' Association Alun Jones from the county will be making a presentation on the unique Enhanced Deganwy Recycling Trial. All residents from Deganwy and district are invited.

The meeting will take place at 7.15 pm at the Deganwy Castle Hotel on Tuesday, 28th April 2009.

The meeting welcomed Ceri Morris, Keep Wales Tidy Project Officer Conwy area, who gave an illuminating talk about her work. A DVD showing achievements so far in the area, accompanied the talk. Her job is to support community groups and encourage the creation of environmental groups, particularly working with young people, drug habilitation groups and schools.

She explained that funding is available for insurance, administration costs, to purchase equipment, shrubs and trees etc. and to help groups initially. She works very closely with community police officers and local councils and showed examples of the Conwy Orchard refurbishment project, adjacent to Conwy Castle.

She also mentioned that Conwy Borough Council has received a grant of £100,000 from Keep Wales Tidy.

Ceri was then asked if she could help with dog fouling in the area, particularly along the cycle path between the Cob and Deganwy village, Deganwy promenade and on the adjacent green area. She volunteered to show a DVD about dog fouling in local schools.

The meeting also learned that fixed penalty tickets are to be issued by CPSO’s and undercover officers will be patrolling the promenade and cycle path and promenade areas. Ceri offered her help in liaising with Conwy CBC regarding the bio-diversity issue of the green and will arrange for Anne Butler, Conwy BC’s Biodiversity Officer, to contact us.

Cllr. Weyman asked if access to a grant and funding would mean having to set up as a Tidy Towns Environmental Group and Ceri replied that we could access these funds under the DDRA umbrella, offering to help us through the process.

MATTERS ARISING:

ROAD MARKING FOR CYCLE PATH Cllr. Weyman reported that this is still an on-going matter and he is monitoring it. Apparently, the bridge over the railway to the nature reserve will be completed by the middle of May 2009.

FLASHING ROAD TRAFFIC SIGNS ENTERING VILLAGE Cllr. Sam Cotton informed the meeting that there is some money available but it will be up for grabs by other localities as well as Deganwy. Prices for these signs vary considerably and Bill Wright said that he did not feel these signs were worth the money, i.e. costing anywhere between £1,000 and £10,000. Conwy Town Council has now taken this on board. Sam Cotton has undertaken to make enquiries on the internet. The cost of flashing signs is to be compared to that of road marking paint.

SHEFFIELD CYCLE STANDS Viv Shorthouse reported that a letter has been sent to Paul Evans, Highways Dept supporting the Council’s efforts in trying to obtain these for the village. Cllr Weyman said that Highways Dept is concerned as to where the money was coming from and is looking into finding funding.

DOG BINS Cllr Cotton is still looking into funding of with Conwy Town Council. Viv Shorthouse again raised the point that in spite of an increased number of dog bins and ‘Please Clear Up After Your Dog’ signs and continual efforts by the DDRA, in conjunction with the Dog Wardens and Conwy BC, to implement a cleaner environment, the green area between the shelter and sand dunes has become a virtual dog toilet, and called for dogs to be kept on leads. A discussion took place and a local resident pointed out that PC Chris Perkins was duty bound to take this matter up as a local priority issue. He also suggested that people should be made aware of the health dangers to children through disease from dog fouling. The meeting resolved to ask PC Perkins to attach priority to dog fouling along Deganwy promenade, beach and associated green area.

A.O.B.

DEGANWY SCHOOL FAYRE This event was again supported by the DDRA and £1500 was raised for the school which will be spent on refurbishing the school hall. The school thanked us for our efforts and Cllr. Cotton suggested that the DDRA should purchase tea/coffee mugs for the Friends of Deganwy School. This will be looked into.

DEGANWY PROM DAY - Saturday 30th May Mr. Clegg, organiser of the DEGANWY DASH run to take place on Friday evening, 29th May, brought the meeting up to date with arrangements, etc.

AGM The AGM this year will take place on Tuesday, 16th June, at the Deganwy Castle Hotel, - 7.00pm. Sam Cotton asked for suggestions for a speaker. Bill Wright offered to look into this. Jason Weyman suggested that in order to promote the DDRA, a raffle prize donated by Deganwy Quay Hotel could be offered at the AGM, utilising DDRA subscription receipts. Subscriptions to be £1 per person, per year. Deganwy & Llanrhos Post Offices also to take subscriptions.

MINUTES OF DDRA COMMITTEE MEETINGS It was agreed that a copy of our Minutes would be posted on the noticeboard in Deganwy village and one copy in Deganwy P.O. Setting up a Deganwy BLOG was suggested.

INFORMATION BOARD Sam Cotton has raised this matter with Conwy Town Council who have agreed to provide some money. Jason Weyman mentioned that funding is available from the Welsh Assembly and CADW.

ATTENDANCE AT COMMITTEE MEETINGS The committee agreed that we expect a representative from the police to attend each DDRA Committee meeting.
